I ended up not being able to get the size I wanted because I don't have a wide enough wheel.

I'm in the same boat of wonderment....i mean how 'narrow' is too narrow? I mean 1/2 an inch? Minimum rim width is just manufacturers covering their butts.....I've seen plenty of guys go 2-3 inches under. His /\ 14.5 probably had a min rim width of 10, if not 12.....tires pinched a little bit, but hey no curb rash on the wheel....

I could easily see the Discount Tire employee attempting to uphold some arbitrary guideline for the same reason (liability/covering asses), rather than capability. I'd just try a different store. Though I'm not convinced that you need new tires right now, when you're talking about tearing apart the front end.

True. Discount being the large chain they are they may have locations that take the liability a little more seriously....I've only done one "questionable mounting" thru them, but it wasn't a problem....no where else has given me grief tho either. A verbal warning/discussion maybe....one place did have me sign a waiver once, but afterwards did what I needed. In their defense i had found the tire on the interstate, it was close to an inch of in size, and was for a trailer.with discount my problem was opposite that of tim's, wheels wider then the tires, going for that ol'skool wheeI tire combo/look on a minitruck. I brought ratchets straps & starting fluid with me just incase.....i didn't hear nothing till the last tire. Mr.BamBam as u already know ur tires are narrower then the wheel, we got 3 of'em no problem with straps, but this one just isn't wanting to seat, we were hoping it would be okay with you is we used some either on it....experience & results are just going to vary i guss

Easiest route, just pick out the rims you want later on and get it done.

Take the tires and wheels to a Mexican tire shop. They'll mount anything.
