i think it has to do with an increased spring rate for heavier loads, and the ability to flex more? I know you dont use the whole leaf pack (too long) but like the shorter springs...i could be completely wrong though lol

On a similar note, does anyone know the exact difference in wheelbase that can be achieved by flipping the leaf springs (i.e. the front of the leaf spring to the rear, rear to front)?

Flip the axle over - leafs mounted on top = more clearance.

My current wheelbase is 113". If I'm measuring right I'll have a 116.5" wheelbase after the spring reversal.
