Spring Over Axle on my Sport Trac

Hey Guys,

I got some generic perches from Texas Off Road Performance the other week.

My friend Bill and I put them on yesterday.
Everything went pretty good. But, the welders we tried to use didn't work too well. The welds didn't hold.

I drove it home late last night from Stafford up to my apt. off 290 and 1960. The pinion angle walked up on me once and I had to kick it in reverse to get it back down.

I called Texas Off Road Performance this morning to see if they could set the pinion angle and weld the perches. They said they don't do that. But he recommended Texas Auto Gear.

I called Texas Auto Gear. The guy on the phone guestimated me $150 to set the angle and weld it. I thought that was a little much. But, he did say he's not the guy that would do it and the other guy would be the one to say for sure. But the other guy got home at 2am from offroading in Oklahoma this weekend and won't be in til the afternoon.

I'm gonna call another place close to me and just ask them if they can weld the perches. I'll loosen the U-bolts and try to get the angle right again.

What do you guys think?

Oh yeah, and I'm going out to the Slabs this coming weekend with some guys from www.offroadworld.net. Ya'll are welcome to come along. I'll be leaving early morning Sat. and camping over night there. Sounds like they want to camp near Eagles Rock.

Cya,
John

Here's some pictures.

As you can see I currently have the shocks mounted to the U-bolt mounting plates. But I will need to move them to the anti-swaybar mounting brackets, cuz they are currently bottoming out when the springs compress.

Here's a temporary bracket that we did until I can get a longer brake line.

Here's a nice side droop shot.

Of course after re-locating the shocks to the anti-swaybar mounts it will be a little less.

Here's a shot of it on the ground.

Yeah, the truck is sitting raked, but at least the frame is much higher off the ground. Besides, going up really steep hills won't seem as bad.

Edited by: Aquaman at: 3/17/03 1:32:28 pm

That's not bad. The muffler shop I used charged my $90. Of course, I didn't ask until they were already done.
I am using the Superlift extended brakeline, not sure on the part number.
Texas Auto Gear is kind of weird about their pricing. You could call every day of the week asking for the same thing, probably get a different person on the phone, and definately get a different price.

Yep, they know you by name Randall. You must call them a lot.

When I said that I had an Explorer, the guy mentioned that they were working on Michael's D44.

Ok, I've got a question about the brake lines.
Did you guys get a close look at my brake lines?
Is that the same as yours? With the rubber tube going to the top of the pumpkin into a Y connector and have hard lines contouring the axle to the brakes. I know mine will differ at the end, cuz I've got drums and ya'll have disc, right?

Anyway, I was looking at pics of lizardtrac's SOA and noticed that his brake line and Y connector are in a different location. It looked like it was connected to the driver's side U-bolt mounting plate and the Y connector had one rubber hose outlet going to the driver's side brake and a small metal tube going to the passengers side.

So, if your brakes are the same, then your extended brake line that you got from Superlift probably wound't work for me. But, they probably due have something for the Sport Trac since they make a lift for it. My rear setup is probably just like a Rangers. So I might be able to get an extended brake line made for a Ranger too.

Let me know what ya'll think.

I have drums in the rear, and my brakeline setup looks just like yours. I have hard lines going to both sides, with the rubber central line.

Cool! Thanks Randall for the info. So the older Explorers with the drum brakes probably have the same setup. I'm sure Superlift sells the extended brake line for the ST anyway.

Well, I'm not really sure that they are working on my Dana 44, but they have it . They have been having vendor troubles lately. I'll be speaking to them later today to let them know my time table for this project and we'll see what happens from there.
