TREADlines - Tread Lightly! 06/13 Newsletter

wake up and smell the closures - a word from Tread Lightly!'s executive director - lori mccullough
Almost 10 years ago, I published my first "state of the union" regarding outdoor recreation in America. I felt a bit like an alarmist then (read full article here), but access to public lands is only becoming more restricted. Today, I challenge anyone to find a national forest in America that has even half of the dirt roads and trails it had open in 2003 still open in 2013, especially routes open for travel to motorized vehicles.
At Tread Lightly!, our priorities are keeping roads and trails open to motorized vehicles because we know no one that gets to a forest, park, lake or desert by walking there. We encourage you to lend a helping hand to your local land management agency. We even offer grants to clubs and individuals willing to organize a local stewardship project.

Upcoming BOY SCOUT Jamboree
One important facet of responsible outdoor recreation is engaging and educating our youth and teaching them best practices. Tread Lightly! has the opportunity to work with the Boy Scouts of America at the 2013 National Scout Jamboree in Beckley, West Virginia.
The Boy Scout Jamboree kicks off on July 15th! Join Evan and Jerrica at the Tread Lightly! booth to win awesome prizes from Goal Zero and Adjust-A-Grill! On top of that, Tread Lightly! will have bonus incentives for becoming a member at Jamboree. Come by, learn the TREAD principles and take the first step into a lifetime of responsible outdoor recreation!

REC TIPS:
RESPONSIBLE CAMPING

1. Camp at least 200 feet from water, trails and other campsites.

2. Camping supplies in natural colors blend with natural surrounds and are less intrusive to other campers' experiences.

3. Before and after a trip, wash your gear and support vehicle to reduce the spread of invasive species.
