I may do it anyway, and just run both systems.

I'll definitely look into this. After out first use of the CB's when we did the memorial run, it was pretty hit and miss if we could hear anyone. That situation as well was with all of us in a line.

Even you had difficulties as well during the run. So you don't think this is a good idea for the group?

Billavista's Comm Basics:
It's long as hell, but it's a good read.

Buzzkill.
I hear the setup can be as little as $200 for the unit and antenna combined.

I'm definitely down for a couple hundred bucks, let's look into that at our meeting on the 8th.

I edited in pricing of some of the recommended models on the initial post. You can definitely get in under $200.

I will do a little more research later tonight, as my CB doesn't work all that great (I'll still keep it in the rig - most can figure out why), but if we can agree as a group I think the VHF would be a better fit for our group.

Interesting. Good cheap CB's are everywhere. How far away do you need to reach? Do the VHF radios come in 24 volt? (If not, I will to look into a MUCH bigger inverter....

It just depends. In a place like Moab, for example, you can't reach very far at all with a cb because of the hills and whatnot. Aside from that, the reception is so much clearer, it's more like talking on a phone, by comparison. As far as 24 volts, I'm not sure. I've not seen them labelled as being only for 12 volt.

I also just read, that in Texas, once you have an operator's license, you can get custom radio operator license plates for multiple vehicles, including a trailer, with your call sign on it, all for an initial registration of each plate of $2, plus $1 extra dollar at registration renewal time.

I just signed up for the above, expires on the 31st. Pretty decent deal, since the book you get for free sells for $29.

That's way too much to scan, plus I don't think you'd read it anyway.
