A Salute to a Legend: The Ford Bronco

Image
On June 12th 1996, after a full thirty year run, the last Ford Bronco ever built slowly rolled off the assembly line to a modest ceremony attended by a select few. Deemed unfit for a changing market, it was the Bronco’s two-door format that was its ultimate undoing. The toaster shaped Bronco II, arguably one of the must unattractive SUVs ever built, had already been replaced by the wildly successful Explorer. In an effort to ape that success, Ford replaced the full size Bronco with the bloated big brother to the Explorer, the Expedition.

Forever a pretender to the throne, the Expedition has never really lived up to the Bronco name, nor filled its shoes very well. Whereas the Bronco was originally a rugged tool shaped by a day’s hard labor, albeit with the appropriate amount of weekend fun, the Expedition has become nothing more that a hulking four-wheeled suburban frigate most frequently seen in Colorado, but sporting Texas plates. Its cargo area is less is likely to store ranch tools in favor of child seats and a family dog. These daily charges are noble domestic endeavors for the inappropriately named Expedition, but it is no Bronco. The gap left by the departure of the Bronco has never really been filled. For the past several years, Ford has flirted with the return of a new and proper Bronco, but until that day arrives, we just have to reflect on the good old days.
