While the days of draping a paper map over your hood and thumbing through guidebooks are far from over, an increasing number of overlanders are relying on more sophisticated means of navigating and information sourcing. The latest such resource is iOverlander. A website and free iOS app available on the iTunes store, iOverlander was created to provide travelers with up to date information on where safely camp, eat, find supplies and other critical travel resources.

Created by Sam of Song of the Road, and Jessica of Life Remotely, iOverlander uses crowd-gathered information supplied by the most reliable sources on the road––other fellow travelers. The collaborative database ensures the information contained within the system is as current as possible and will continually grow as more users tap into this unique resource. iOverlander promises to help travelers find the accommodations and resources they need with the touch of a screen.

If the amount of information already available at the time of the launch is any indicator of future success, iOverlander will quickly grow to be one of the most trusted travel tools on the open road. The ease of use paired to the concisely delivered information is impressive and includes GPS coordinates, images, descriptions of amenities, local attractions, as well as other pertinent details. Best of all, the desired information can be downloaded and accessed offline at any time. With an increasing number of people embarking on their on protracted journeys, iOverlander may change the way travelers share and find travel information.

Really neat.

Probably not much for Texas are anywhere further north.

Any idea if there is an Android equivalent?
