Better Setup: Winch on Trailer, or Rear Winch on Tow Rig?

On one hand, having the winch on the trailer means that it can be used with multiple tow rigs. On the other hand, a rear winch on a tow rig can be used for other things besides the one trailer.

Discuss.

Trailer mount. Looks like you're a serious gearhead. What can you do with a rear mounted winch on a 2wd?

Pull people out of ditches, for one. Use it with other trailers for two. Not sure what that serious gear head remark is about.

Also, it is two wheel drive now, but may not always be that way.

Tow straps knocks out your first example. Also why need one for multiple trailers? Our rigs will have at the least front mounted winches so we could winch ourselves on trailers, or we could use our rig winches to winch others that don't have winches on their trailers. How often are YOU gonna be in a multi-trailer situation? I will between mine, eugene's car car hauler and his 42ft gooseneck.

So your reasoning for mounting a winch in one location over another is that you are mounting it in one location over the other? Sounds like pretty good (read:circular) logic to me.

My vote would be both. Weld a receiver tube to the trailer and mount the winch in one of those fancy multi mounts. Run the power supply to the rear of the truck and make a set of cables long enough to reach from there to the winch on the trailer. Best of both options, plus you can also slide the winch into a front mount or not have it on the trailer at all.

Definitely a valid option. My only concerns with that method is that those types of mounts kill any hint of an approach/departure angle, and that they seem like they'd be easy theft targets.
