1997 SOHC timing guide replacement on Shade

Well, as most of you know, shade's replacement sohc motor gave up the ghost on christmas. So the plan was to rebuild Shade's original motor and replace all the timing guides. After tearing down shade's original motor, it was discovered that yes..ALL the guides were bad...and by bad, i mean completely gone. SO after borrowing the cam timing tool set from work and buying the ford replacement guides, Kris and I got to work.

After tearing down the motor and removing the timing cover, we discovered this:


Yea, the timing guide was completely gone and Im assuming it was in the hundred tiny peices of plastic that fell out of the motor. So after figuring out how the timing set works, we got to work and ended up with this:




So now the next week involves taking the valve covers, oil pan, timing covers, and assorted brackets to work and putting them in the vat cleaner, reassembly, and start on pulling the old motor. Hopefully in a couple of weeks, we will have shade running like new and no more rattle!!!

Well we know he drove it for 5K before pulling that motor, before that who knows. It should run much better now. I'm just glad the hard part is over.

I ordered all the lower gaskets this morning from work, so they should be here tomorrow. Tonight I will be getting shade ready for another motor transplant and get everything disconnected and out of the way.

Should also mention that the guides and chains I bought from ford, so it has all the official Motorcraft goodies installed in it lol.

Sounds like a lot of work. So this is the motor you got at the junk yard you're rebuilding, or are you rebuilding the one that came out originally?

Neat. I didn't know I could return a motor. Is it like Wal Mart where you can use it for a few hundred mile, say you don't like it and take it back without a receipt?

Well, we never actually installed the salvage motor, we just tore it down far enough to look at the guides

That's cool though that you were able to return and it be able to rebuild the original. Nice cost savings. Are you positive nothing else is wrong with the orig motor, and anything you're doing while it's apart just to be on the safe side?

So yesterday, I brought the valve covers, timing cover, and both oil pan halves to work and put them in the parts washer/heated vat machine for about 4 hours of high pressure solvent cleaning. I love that machine. Every ounce of grease, grime, and even paint is taken off and all thats left is shiny fresh metal! And last night, with Kris's assistence, got the motor all put back together and pretty much ready to go back in. Should also note that Kris recommended that I remove the balance shaft, so even though Shade is 4x4, he will not have the balance shaft installed.

We also did the Kris Guilbeaux balance shaft removal mod. It takes out one of the guides and about 7 lbs of moving weight off the motor that really isn't needed.

What do you mean it's not 'really' needed?

It's meant to reduce slight vibrations in the motor. 2wd truck do not have them but 4wd ones do. This is the third one I've removed from a sohc. My brother sport and and red flyer both have this done.
