I am going to be putting in some info and upgrades for Dana 300's here. Michael, I know you were interested in the dana 20, but I think the 300 would be a better choice. It uses helically cut gears just like an atlas, and has a 4.0:1 kit available for under $800. The c-4 to dana 300 adapter is pn# 50-8100, priced at 648.85 from the advance adapters site. The 700r4 to d300 adapter is part numbers 50-6303 & 50-6309 priced at 546.40 from the AA site. More later...

The 20 is a gear driven case too, right? Those are some pricey adapters. Don't forget to include the price of a flip kit for the 300 as it is a pass side drop tcase. Not sure on the price of that, but I don't think it is cheap. You are right though, the dana 300 is a fairly strong case that will live behind a V8 and a heavy throttle foot.

yep you're right, I forogt about needing a flip kit, which run about $800. That makes this a bad idea The difference between the d300 and d20 gears are that the d300 gears are hellically (sp?) cut, which makes them stronger. But this is all adding up to be way to much to bother with. The d20 is probably a better option.

I need to get a good look at a BW 1356.
I read today that it will bolt right up to 4R70W tranny in my new Explorer Limited. Stadx2 said he didn't want to do it cuz it was too big, but I need to check it out for myself.
Unless you guys know of any other not really expensive t-cases that will bolt up to a 6 bolt tranny with 31 splines.

Ok, I just saw another post about the BW 1356 possibly being to big for the Explorer, and the guy posted, but what about the D300? So, what did D300 come out of?
Are they 6 bolt and 31 splined?

Ok, I'm confused about the 31 spline count. I'm not sure if they are saying the 4R70W tranny has an output shaft with 31 splines or that they need a t-case with 31 spline output.
Forgive my ignorance. I've spent more time with computers than cars, but I am a quick study.

Here's the Explorerforum thread:
www.explorerforum.com/for...post727633

Good thing you brought that up (slipped my mind too), in this case I would say the output shaft on the trans mission is the key here, a driveshaft yoke can eith be changed or, hence a custom one built, but for text application, what's both on yours, plus O.D. of both?

And do you want manual or electric?

And sitting here thinking about it, I think pretty much most other cases that may fit might have to do a driveshaft mod.

*thinking, I know it's a scary thought*

Edited by: Special Vehicle Operator at: 8/13/03 7:39 am

I will definitely prefer a manual t-case.

I did some more reading today. As Stadx2 finally posted his AWD to 4WD conversion on www.explorerforum.com and he stated that the 4R70W tranny has a 31 spline output.

I'm just exploring options. I'm not ready to convert yet.
